CHANGING THE RULES: Essential information on the UK's updated ETA

The new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) form, which will be mandatory for all Canadians entering the UK as of January 8, 2025, will be available for pre-application starting on November 27. This is all the information you require.

Why: The government is making significant efforts to digitize the immigration and border systems in the United Kingdom. ETAs guarantee more thorough security checks are performed prior to individuals starting their journey to the UK and are digitally connected to a traveler's passport.

Who: In order to enter the UK, all visitors, including infants and children, who do not require a visa, will need to have an ETA. Passengers with British and Irish passports are exempt. An ETA is required for passengers continuing their journey across the UK.

When: Starting on January 8, 2025, Canadians will need one in order to enter the UK. The dates for other nations may be earlier or later, but by April 25, 2025, all visitors must obtain one in order to enter the nation.

The amount is £10 per person.

What it permits: Unlimited access to the UK for a maximum of six months for travel, business, short-term studies, tourism, and visiting family and friends.

When can I expect to receive one? ETAs must be provided prior to arrival. Although it could happen sooner, processing will take up to three business days.

The duration of the ETA is two years or until the traveler's passport expires, whichever comes first. It will be associated with the traveler's passport.

How to apply: The UK ETA app, which is accessible on Google Play and App Stop, will make it easy and quick for anyone who needs to apply for an ETA.

The government says the introduction of ETAs is in line with the approach many other countries have taken to border security, including the US and Australia.

“Digitization enables a smooth experience for the millions of people who pass through the border every year,” says Minister for Migration and Citizenship, Seema Malhotra. “The worldwide expansion of the ETA demonstrates our commitment to enhance security through new technology and embedding a modern immigration system.”
